New Model
New Model starts a new and empty model that contains only the mandatory simulation control parameters. The Model Settings dialog will appear. Select the time bounds and make any other changes you want then click OK and an empty sketch will appear. The model will be unnamed until you perform a Save or Save as.
• | If you have modified the Workbench model and you have not set the option to load multiple models you will be queried to see if you want to save your changes to the current model. |
• | If you have set the new model option in the Settings tab of the Options dialog, New Model creates a model with the contents you have specified. |
• | If you have asked for new models to open in the Text Editor in the Advanced tab of the Global Options dialog the Text Editor will open instead of the Sketch Editor. |
Open Model
Open Model opens a text format (.mdl) or Binary format (.vmf) Vensim Model that is on disk and puts it into the Workbench. When you ask to open a model you will see the File Selection dialog described later in this chapter.
In addition to the standard model formats, you can choose to open Datasets (.vdf), Venapp Application Definitions (.vcd or .vcf), and Vensim Command Files (.cmd).
• | .vdf(Vensim Data Format) is a dataset generated from a simulation or data conversion. When you open this as a model, blank equations are created for all the variables contained in the dataset. This is useful for reviewing the contents of a dataset and for doing free-form data analysis. This is also an alternative way to begin the construction of a model. |
• | .vcd‡(Vensim Application Definition) is a file containing the commands and descriptions defining a Vensim Application or Venapp. If you open this as a model the application will be started. You can also open .vcf files. These are the same as .vcd files except they are in binary format. |
• | .cmd‡ (Vensim Command file) is a file containing a series of Vensim commands. If you open this the commands will be executed in batch mode. |
Closes the current window. If the Sketch or Text Editor is active the model it contains will be closed. You will be queried to save any changes. If a tool output window is active it will be closed unless it is locked. If the Control Panel or Subscript Control is active it will be closed. Ctrl + W is the same as File>Close.
Save
Saves the current model or file. This menu item is grayed unless the Sketch Editor or Text Editor is active. Ctrl+S is the same as Save.
Save As/Save Settings
If the Sketch Editor or Text Editor is Active this will allow you to save the current to a different model name or format. You can save models as either a text format model, a binary format model or a version 1.62 text format model. The last of these will make the model readable by someone using an older version of Vensim.
If the active window is a tool output window, Save As will let you save the contents of the window to disk. This is discussed in more detail in Chapter 12. Ctrl+S is the same as Save As when an output window is active.
If the Control Panel or Subscript Control is active it saves the current workbench settings (model, workbench variable, subscripts and so on). Ctrl + S is the same as Save As when a control is active.
Load.../Lock/Unlock
The name of this Menu item depends on context.
Lock/Unlock will be displayed if a tool output window is active. This command toggles the lock status of the output window.
Load is grayed when a control is active.
Loadis grayed when you are working with the Sketch Editor or Text Editor on a model in normal mode. However, in off-line mode Load will load the active model into the Workbench for analysis.
In the Venapp Editor Run Venapp is displayed.
In the Text Editor: Load Custom is active when you are editing a graph description file. Run Venapp is displayed if you are working on a Vensim Application Definition. Run Commands is displayed if you are working with a command file. Dat2VDF is displayed if you are working on a data file.
Edit File†
This command is used to open a file (not a model) in the Text Editor. You can also invoke the Text Editor from the toolbar and get the same results.
Prints the contents of the currently active window. See "Printing" later in this chapter. Print is grayed if a control is active. Ctrl + P is the same as File>Print.
Print Settings
Let you set up the printer. See "Printing" later in this chapter for more detail.
Exit
Exit closes Vensim.
If you have changed the Workbench model, the loaded toolsets, any files in the Text Edit tool, or any sketches, Vensim asks if you want to save the changes. When Vensim exits, it records the current settings and the positions of controls so that when you start Vensim again you can pick up where you left off.
C:\temp\...
Vensim keeps a list of the four most recent models you have worked on. Selecting one of the models in this list will open that model directly.
