Vensim Help

You can use the menu to open models and move between windows. Most of this can also be done using the Toolbar described in the next section. Many menu items will remain grayed in the Vensim Model Reader. The available menu commands are:

File>Open to open a new model. This will close the current model. You can only have one model open at a time.

File>Close to close the currently active window. If there is only the model showing the model will be closed and no model will be active.

File>Save As applies only when you have a graph or table in the foreground. It allows you to save the contents as a text file or metafile.

File>Print prints the contents of the foreground window. A dialog will come up with the available printing options.

File>Print Options allows you to set the printer to use as well as some other options. These settings can also be made from the File>Print command.

File>Exit closes the Vensim Model Reader.

There may also be models listed below Exit. These are recently used models. Select a name to open it.

Edit>Copy copies the contents of the foreground window to the clipboard. You can highlight sections of model structure by dragging across them. Graphs and tables are always copied in their entirety but you can highlight a portion of the text contained in document tools.

Edit>Select All selects everything on a view. This command is only available when a sketch is in the foreground.

Edit>Find allows you to search for a variable in the model. You will be prompted for which variable you want to search for. Select it and click OK. Vensim may have to move to another view to find the variable.

Edit>Find Workbench finds the variable named in the main Vensim title.

Edit>Find Again finds another occurrence of the currently highlighted variable if there is more than one.

View>Zoom allows you to zoom in or out on model structure. You can select a preset percent or choose your own. The Fit to Screen option will keep the whole view visible without scrolling.

Changes>Read Additional Changes from File allows you to load changes from a changes (.cin) file. This Menu Item is only availbale when you have entered simulation setup mode by clicking on the set button. You can read as many files as you want in this manner. Each time you read in a file it will add to the changes that have previously been read in or entered on the screen. If you read in a value for a Constant or Lookup that has already been changed the new values will replace the changes already made.

Changes>Write Changes Made to .cin file allows you to record all Constant and Lookup changes to a changes (.cin) file. These changes can later be read in using the Changes>Read Addtional Changes from File menu item. Note this menu item is only available in simulation setup mode.

Options>Options brings up the Options dialog. You can experiment with this but the only option that is likely to be important is whether or not you want to see line markers on graph lines. These can be helpful when printing to black and white printers.

Windows>Control Panel opens the Control Panel.

Windows>Subscript Control opens the Subscript Control.

Windows>Pop Output Forward brings all graphs, tables and documentation to the foreground.

Windows>Output Window List displays a list of all graphs, tables and documentation windows.

Windows>Close all Output closes all graphs, tables and documentation windows. Note if the windows have been locked they will not be closed.

Windows>Error History shows a history of any error messages.

Windows>Selection History lists the variables you select into the workbench. It is useful as a memory jogger.

Windows>Pop Build Forward brings the model structure to the foreground. It does not delete any other windows just puts them behind.

Windows>Keep Build Behind forces the model windows to stay in the background even when you click on it.

The name of different windows that exist are appended to the bottom of the Windows menu. Click on one to bring it forward.

Help>Instructions opens up help for the Vensim Model Reader.

Help>Keyword Search allows you to search for help on a keyword.

Help>About Vensim shows the current Vensim Version number.
