Vensim Help

The Magic Wand tool class contains two members, the Hide Wand and the Un-hide Wand.  These provide a simple mechanism for hiding words and arrows in order to remove clutter.  The Magic Wand changes the appearance of a sketch, but never changes the underlying causal structure or equations for the model.

The Hide Wand appears solid while the Un-hide Wand appears hollow .  The cursor shape will also reflect this.

Hiding Words and Arrows

To hide a word or variable, select the Hide Wand tool and click on the word you want to hide.  The word will be hidden as will the arrows coming out of the word or the arrows going into the word.

To hide an arrow, select the Magic Wand tool and click on the arrowhead of the arrow you want to hide.  You will no longer see the arrow.

Hiding words and arrows with the Hide Wand is the same as selecting the words and arrows and then setting the Hide Depth (Edit>Hide to Depth>) to be 1 greater than the currently displayed hide depth (View>Hidden Elements>).

Un-hiding Words and Arrows

To un-hide a word or arrow you must first set the hide depth so that word or arrow is visible.  You can change the hide depth with the View>Hidden Elements menu item or by using the End key to show more hidden things.  You can also use the H key to toggle between everything hidden and nothing hidden.

To un-hide a word select the Un-hide Wand and click on the word you want to un-hide.  To un-hide an arrow, click on the arrowhead.  Nothing will change visibly, since hidden words and arrows are already shown.  When you decrease the hide depth (Home key) they will remain visible.

Un-hiding with the Un-hide wand is the same as selecting and setting the hide depth to be one less than the currently displayed hide depth.

NOTE If you want to remove a variable from a sketch instead of just hiding it, select the word with the Pointer tool and type the Del key.  You can only remove words that are not used anywhere in the sketch.  If you remove a word that is used in the sketch, it will be replaced with a hidden Shadow variable.
