When you work with the Sketch Editor, you are working with a view, and this view is implicit and usually not mentioned when discussing the Sketch Editor. When you open the Sketch Editor, it will show the first view. By default this view is called "View 1", but you can rename it to anything you want. You can have as many views as you want, but only one view will be visible at one time.
You can add anything that exists in the model to a view. If you add a new variable to a view, it is automatically added to the model. Shadow variables can appear any number of times in a view, but a variable can be defined only once within a view (though it can also be defined in other views with Vensim making sure the definitions match). If a variable is defined in a view, then all of its causes will automatically be included in the view, although you can hide them if you want. There is no limit to the size and complexity of a view, but simple and easily understood views are preferable to comprehensive but hard-to-follow views.
