Vensim 7 is available for download or purchase in the Vensim store. This includes several significant new features, including: – Interactive sensitivity runs in Synthesim – Percentile export for sensitivity runs – Calibration payoffs can now compare model variables to one another as well as to data (great for synthetic data experiments) – A trigger […]
In Vensim 7, we’ve combined real-time Synthesim with sensitivity analysis, so you can see the distribution of outcomes from Monte Carlo runs interactively. This is great for giving users an appreciation of the risk associated with a decision, rather than just a best guess.
Vensim can be used to put big data in context, by incorporating the learnings from big data in simulations that account for organizational structure and finances. Vensim can also do data intensive simulation, with flexible I/O, advanced algorithms for calibration, optimal filtering, confidence bounds and Monte Carlo simulation.
It’s generally a good idea to begin thinking about your models with continuous time and quantities, particularly for strategic applications where you care about the big picture. But there are times when it matters that quantities are discrete – you can’t ride half a horse. Here’s a quick look at modeling such situations, starting with […]

We at Ventana Systems sadly mark the passing of Jay Forrester, pioneer in servomechanism control, digital computing, System Dynamics and global modeling. We hope that our tools and our work may carry on in Jay’s spirit, to help people better understand and manage complex systems, tackling the biggest problems with courage and integrity.
The latest version of Climate Interactive‘s award-winning C-ROADS climate change policy simulator, powered by Vensim, is available at https://www.climateinteractive.org/tools/c-roads/ You can run the simpler World Climate version online, in a nice browser interface:
The Millennium Institute (MI) is pleased to announce the release of Version 1.2 of the Integrated Sustainable Development Goals planning model (iSDG). The iSDG is a comprehensive simulation tool developed with Vensim that generates country-specific development scenarios to show the implications of policy interventions on a country’s progress towards the SDGs. What’s New in Version […]
Energy Innovation has a cool new simulator that lets users explore what it takes to achieve energy and emissions targets, in detail. The simulator is online with a custom HTML5 interface that runs a Vensim model on servers using the Multicontext shared library. The interface was developed by Todd Fincannon. It has extensive documentation, and […]
This video shows several ways to build causal loop diagrams in Vensim. We start simple with Vensim PLE, and then illustrate some additional features, like navigation links, that are possible in DSS. The first ten minutes should have you up & running on the basics.
Congratulations to Joona Tuovinen for receiving the Best Poster award at ISDC 2016, for The Dynamics of Product Commonality: implications of the circular causality between product and firm structures. The conference proceedings include the paper and Vensim model in the Supporting Material.
This video walks through a critique of the World model that kicked off the Limits to Growth debate, starting with Forrester’s World Dynamics, followed by World3 and the Limits to Growth and many subsequent works. The purpose of this video is not to discuss the mapping of the world models to the real world, though […]

SDM-Doc is a nice open source tool for documenting system dynamics models. The latest version runs in Java and provides new functionality. See the Workbench for a link: SDM-Doc/Java The Java version provides a superset of the .NET capabilities (expect for the display of stock and flow diagrams). Among the additional capabilities are: Feedback Loop […]
The 2015 Dana Meadows Award goes to Mohammad Jalali, Armin Ashouri Rad, Oscar Herrera-Restrepo and Hui Zhang for Information Diffusion through Social Networks: the Case of an Online Petition. People regularly use online social networks due to their convenience, efficiency, and significant broadcasting power for sharing information. However, the diffusion of information in online social networks […]

We’re pleased to share our presentation from the Vensim User’s Group meeting at the 2013 International System Dynamics Conference in Cambridge. The highlight of most immediate interest is the imminent release of Vensim 6.4, which runs in 64 bit mode, permitting models to address much more memory. An alpha version is already running on our computers.

See: http://simulation.tbm.tudelft.nl/ema-workbench/contents.html “Exploratory Modeling and Analysis (EMA) is a research methodology that uses computational experiments to analyze complex and uncertain systems (Bankes, 1993).That is, exploratory modeling aims at offering computational decision support for decision making under deep uncertainty and Robust decision making. The EMA workbench is aimed at providing support for doing EMA on models […]
Bob Walker discovered yet another use for Vensim – naming his boat. He created the graphic with the name and feedback loop and then had the sign company transfer that to the back of his new boat. The result floats above the rest.
In order to track the ability of a team to do its work it is necessary to know both how much skill the team has built up as a team and what the experience levels of the individual team members are. By creating a matrix of team membership that includes both time with the team […]
For analytic work in support of capital investment decisions the ultimate measure of success is not always clear. Plants and distribution systems that perform as expected in terms of throughput and uptime do validate the results of technical components of the simulation. Making such comparisons in detail is, however, costly and time consuming. In addition, […]
C-ROADS and C-LEARN are interactive, accessible computer simulations that help people visualize the long-term climate impacts of decisions being undertaken today. By making it easy to add up country emissions targets and to project their implications for the “bathtub dynamics” of the atmosphere, they bring accountability to the global negotiation process. C-ROADS has a number […]
